Course Description:
This course examines topics of social and political import and their representation through film in order to understand the influence of politics in film and the influence of film on public opinion. We will watch films and consider their socio-political arguments - whether they are overt or subtle - in order to become, broadly, better consumers of the everyday rhetoric we encounter.Each week, we will watch a film and hone our visual literacy skills to decode and appreciate each director's vision and argument. We will learn to think of films as socio-political rhetoric as we consider how filmmakers author messages through both story and intentional artistic choices (e.g., narrative form, editing, adaptation).
